The Northbrae neighborhood lies in the northern part of Berkeley, along the Albany border. This lush and friendly neighborhood centers around the Hopkins/Monterey shopping district. Many consider this 2-block stretch of local markets to be one of the best kept secrets of the East Bay. Here, locals buy fresh flowers, meat and produce at the renowned Monterey Market as well as a variety of specialty shops.  For extended shopping, head north on Monterey to Solano Avenue. With Albany so close nearby, you have easy access to a variety of restaurants as well as grocery and boutique shops.

The Neighborhood Feel of Northbrae

The Northbrae neighborhood exudes a strong community feel. In addition to the extensive markets, locals take advantage of the recreational areas, from Cedar Rose Parks to the Ohlone Greenway which links several East Bay communities with its bike and pedestrian trail.  You’ll find that most residents prefer to walk to their shopping errands. For extended trips, however, there is ample AC Transit between the El Cerrito and Downtown Berkeley BART stations. In addition, #18 takes you from the top of Hopkins to Albany’s vibrant commercial district.

This mature and classical neighborhood was highly influenced by conservationist Duncan McDuffie. He had a vision of creating a single family homes in a park-like setting. Today, in addition to lush and well-maintained landscapes, Northbrae has streets lined with mature sycamores, a public circle with classical balustrade and fountain as well as stone pillars and boulders. Home prices in the Northbrae range from $700’s to $1.1 million and up.

Schools in the Northbrae neighborhood include several pre-schools, Jefferson Elementary, MLK Jr. Middle School, which runs adjacent to the aforementioned park north of the market area;  King Junior High, St. Mary’s College High School Prep, and The Crowden Music School for grades four through eight, offering a unique curriculum for serious students of music.
